چکیده

Thank you for your consideration of the manuscript entitled “Surprising Behaviors in Flapping Locomotion with Passive Pitching.” We were pleased to receive the positive feedback from the referees. In our revised submission we have made a number of adjustments in response to the referees’ comments and suggestions. In response to the first referee’s comments, we have added to the paper a short explanation of the linear relationship between horizontal velocity and flapping frequency in the clamped wing experiments, and have adjusted our statements regarding efficiency. In response to the second referee’s suggestions, we have added numerous comments and references regarding related work in the biological community. In particular, as suggested we have now included the resonant frequency of the immersed wing system in the experiments and numerics, which is found importantly to be near to the flapping frequency yielding the largest increase in lateral velocities. Also, instead of referring to the wing of previous consideration as “rigid”, we now refer to it as “clamped.”

Direction Reversal in Flapping Flight and Shape Changing Locomotion

I will discuss two fluid-body interaction problems. The first relates to the experiments of Moret and Zhang (NYU Applied Math Lab, 2008) on a wing with active heaving but passive pitching. The experiments have indicated the existence of a bistable region in flapping frequency where either ”forward” or ”backward” flight may be achieved. I will discuss numerical simulations that are used to bette...

Study of design parameters of flapping-wings

As one of the most important components of a flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV), the design of an energy-efficient flapping-wing has been a research interest recently. Research on insect flight from different perspectives has been carried out, mainly with regard to wing morphology, flapping kinematics, and unsteady aerodynamics. However, the link between the wing morphology and kinematics ...

Optimal hovering kinematics with respect to various flapping-wing shapes

Flapping-wing kinematics for insect flight has been studied for decades, especially since engineers became interested in flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs). Previous work mainly focused on understanding kinematic patterns employed by different insects from the perspective of their trajectories and aerodynamics, and on optimization of kinematic parameters to enhance the understanding. How...

Experimental and computational studies of the aerodynamic performance of a flapping and passively rotating insect wing

Flapping wings are important in many biological and bioinspired systems. Here, we investigate the fluid mechanics of flapping wings that possess a single flexible hinge allowing passive wing pitch rotation under load. We perform experiments on an insect-scale (≈1 cm wing span) robotic flapper and compare the results with a quasi-steady dynamical model and a coupled fluid–structure computational...
